Orangutans are the only great apes native to Asia. They reside exclusively on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, part of the Indonesian archipelago. Orangutans are characterized by having long, red shaggy fur and the mature males develop large flaps on the cheeks. Unlike other great apes, such as chimps and gorillas, orangutans tend to be solitary with the exception of mothers with young. They are omnivores and will eat fruit as well as leaves, shoots and bird eggs. Orangutans are an endangered species; humans cut down their habitat for oil plantations and steal the infants for the pet trade. In the wild, orangutans have few natural predators; although they do fall victim to clouded leopards and tigers and may die from being bitten by snakes if they rouse the reptiles.
